When I joined IBM on 3rd July 2009, the first thing I noticed was the poster of Smarter Planet at the gallery leading to my induction room. Later during induction, we were shown the video advertising Smarter Planet concept and how it has become the buzzword here in IBM. However, when I reached the floor where I work, was surprised that very few people talk about it and very few even doing something about it. I was astonished how people can be mute to such a special and important initiative, a dream if realized would change the earth and the way we live on it.

One thing for sure that people will have to come forward, brainstorm on the ideas and on how to implement this in real world. Unless this happens everything else is just words that sound great but in reality are nothing more than sounds. For achieving the objective, the resilience should be developed in the initiative and more and more people should get involved with the sense of belonging to the cause. We all are working on some project for some client but it is our moral duty, a fundamental duty to make this planet, Our Mother Earth a better place to live on. For years she has provided us all what we have needed and most of the times we have overused the resources that she provided; now the time has come to return a minuscule amount of what we have used. It is the time to say THANK YOU to her for being there with us all the times we needed her.

For the success of any country it is necessary that its people are educated and literate. India has been a feudal for centuries. The concept of nationhood is still new and people find it hard to understand this and therefore we see acts of riots, religious and regional conflicts taking place everywhere in the country. Education focussing on national integration, cross-cultural sensitivity and equality has the potential to be an instrument to bring harmony and achieving social objectives besides creating a learned society.

India – Sense of Belonging and Participation among Masses May 29, 2009

It is true that sense of belonging lacks in India. We take freedom and democracy for granted and live like feuds. We, in India, are culturally distinct people, with differences in languages, customs, rites and rituals. We came together (not all, but yet many) for a purpose during National Movement, an objective – Independence. But when British left India, that objective was accomplished. Now, the masses had no reasons to be together. One objective was achieved, now what? There was silence like in a battle field after the war and who were left didn’t know what to do. The leaders were not able to present the next objective as Development of Nation to the masses. They had no sense of belonging and participation before Struggle and none was left after it either. They were just put into the Union without sensitizing them about this union, thus no objective either. If our leaders then would have concentrated on this thing too like they did in making Union, the sense of belonging and participation would have sparked the hearts and minds of many and these ignited minds would have definitely worked for the development of India. An India, a better governed India would have then emerged.

Social Media

Social Media

Social media has come a long way. Some people have just used it and some have misused it. And few have gained too. Social Media can be a powerful tool if used effectively. Many Social media sites like Facebook, FriendFeed, and Twitter (list is not exhaustive) help you to reach millions. Social Media has gone from the days of Orkut, where you had your personal page on World Wide Web to the stage of Market Networking, giving you a strategic platform to reach millions of audience without or less expenditure and in lesser number of minutes spent.

The major reason that why Social Media has been a huge success is because the people who indulge themselves in this area believe, either knowingly or unknowingly, in ALTRUISM. The basic reason for the success of Web 2.0 is its altruistic nature. The desire to help and be helped. That is why I, and many others, like to call Web 2.0 as Altruist Web.

Blogging(WordPress, Blogger) and Micro-blogging(Twitter) have helped people to say what is in their mind and reach out to millions.

Bookmarking sites have helped people to share links of an article they liked.

In short everything which comes under Social Media realm is running because of altruism. I have never met most of the co-authors on this blog. We just met online through social networking sites like Pagalguy,  Facebook, and Orkut. And at some point thought that we can start something together and what else a Weblog – a Blog. And that is how this started. A social media running on Web2.0 gave way to another social media.

After centuries of feudalism and then attaining nationhood, we are marching into the era of “Webhood”. I just coined this term. It is powerful, more powerful than Nationhood. In Webhood, people belonging to different caste, creed, race, religion, and nation come together to form an altruist society which may or may not meet physically but are involved in sharing, helping and networking resources available with them with the society.

Let’s hope that Webhood will bring masses from different nations together and help in bringing the beautiful earth – Our Mother, more beautiful.
