Much has been made of the decision to put the Prime Minister under the purview of the proposed corruption watchdog, the Lokpal, but the official draft of the Lokpal Bill is full of escape clauses for politicians. All critical decisions in the proposed anti-corruption regime will remain firmly in the hands of the ruling dispensation, although that is the main cause for the widespread impunity for scams involving politicians. In fact, the official draft, which may be promulgated as an ordinance soon, is hardly an improvement on the current situation. Civil society has proposed an option with more teeth.

Oracle sued Google over Java in Android platform ( News and actual complaint).

Is it really sad? Yes for the Java developers and users it is certainly a bad news. But isn’t it true Java deserves its share of goodies. Sun created Java and after initial deals they stuck with IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and others they were not able to monetize Java. Java was used extensively and soon become the most preferred language for enterprise solutions. It was platform independent and could be run on any architecture all its needed was a JVM. In the end of April 2009 Oracle anounced acquisition of Sun Microsystems and became a hardware company. However, the most discussed thing was future of Java. Father of Java, James Gosling resigned Sun Microsystems/Oracle.

The things were not bad till recently. All were enjoying Java platform and developments were full-on. Then Android entered and changed the face of market. Developers started developing applications for Android and Oracle realized that this is the time that they must get the share of the success of Android and filed a patent and copyright infringement lawsuit against Google.

I am shocked and disappointed with this act. We must not forget that Sun held thousands of patents but backed open-source sharing. It cut licensing deals for Java, but also offered free versions. This act will certainly cause anxiety in other corporations that are major users of Java. IBM will be the first one that will be impacted, after Google, if this happens. Also impacted will be Apache Software Foundation, which provides support for the Apache community of open-source software projects.

What will happen to the lawsuit? What will be the future of Java after this lawsuit? These questions will be answered by time. Let’s wait and watch. But this is certainly a black day for Java.

Me, My Nation & My People

Eyes are looking up to the sky thanking the heavenly for the rains; the downpour has always been the direct materialized blessings of the Almighty, shaking the trembling survival with the impulse of life. When the nature rejoices in the shades of green, the eyes get cooled with the vapors in the air, farewell to the hot summer, the thirst is quenched, the dance of life grows up, and the people rejoice in the bliss of the blessings of Mother Nature. The monsoon, which brings a reinforcing wave of life in the Indian peninsula, is once again is engaged in the display of its supernatural might. The happy Indians, who never lost their smile, as never was the wrath of any invading factor much higher than the ocean of happiness dwelling in these hearts, were always rejoicing. Centuries passed with many trying to enslave these people here, forgetting, that here the freedom dwells inside, the true freedom, freedom of soul, which can never be snatched at any worldly cost. The freedom, that no army can threat, no matter if their strength could drink up flowing rivers.

The nostrils getting filled with the intoxicating smell of the soil, relieving us from the smaller pains of life, yet again broadening the smile seems like the nature wants us to relish the essence of life, by always giving us more reasons to be happy. With the smiles on the Indian faces being broadened, the nation gears up for the yet another celebration, the 64th Independence day. Patriotism flowing in the air, with each heart thumping higher and wishing to get even the slightest of high of adrenalin that flew out of bounds, during the freedom struggle of the early 20th century. Wishing itself to be a part of the struggle, the struggle of the birth right of freedom through self rule. Swaraj, Swatantrata, Swabhimaan the powerful words of Hindi, are flowing again in the air, adding to the intoxication the perfect blend of chemicals and emotions, taking up and higher in the realms of ecstasy.

Patriotism, a form of higher love, much above than the individualistic perception of itself, a love that is borne automatically, the moment one opens it eyes and starts playing in the arms of the mother earth. The love is born automatically, out of nowhere. Patriotism is love, not a political agenda, not a reason for war, not a reason for violence. As it can not be, as love can not be a reason that makes another suffers, be it another compatriot, be it another human, be it a foreigner, and be it another nation. Patriotism is love, and love always brings up tolerance, the strongest force, and tolerance is the only achievement of the people of this nation, it is not a weakness, in fact it is the highest achievement one can earn, through love, and love stands the highest thing that can be earned being a human. Throughout the history of this nation there are series of examples of selfless sacrifices which were nothing but the products of tolerance, here for nation, I would not limit myself to the political boundaries, but ill bound myself to even the widest extent of universe, till where the true ideologies of harmony and tolerance which were understood and later propagated to others, through here, exist.

The versatility of Indian patriotism is such that a true Indian patriot, who if is in love with India, is in fact in love with whole creation. Many here would like to raise an eyebrow, thinking me to be yet another propagator of universal love and non violence. So, rather opting to ignore them, it would be better to make them understand the identity of the harmony, tolerance and universal brotherhood which has always found its presence even in the smallest sermon preached by this nation, and only through which is born the strength of non violence. Violence is weakness, only the weakest is the most violent, non violence born out of love, even makes the weakest, the strongest. Imagine a tree, or a building, whose roots or foundation is too deep, for a tempest, for a thunder to shake it, even through multiple times of its arrival, that is tolerance. Violence makes one move out of its own foundations, hence making itself prey to the calamity, whereas non violence is the product of belief in the strength of foundations of love and harmony, which hold the individual so firm that the tolerance is increased and so the chances of survival. This is the reason, for why the natural smile is constant upon the faces of the people here, and this is the only reason, why we are surviving even today, where other civilizations who took up violence and offence, which led to their own extinction, here stands firm the Nation called India, defending itself though love, tolerating every blow, still never losing its own identity.

For the preachers of modified versions of fake freedom who actually are enslaving people for their personal benefits, and for those who get moved away easily by them, they both should understand that the freedom can not be achieved through acts of enslaving others, neither it is harmonically aligned with the true human nature, preached till now by Jagadguru Bharat. Like by freeing the caged birds, looking up at their joy of being freed, the same joy of freedom is equally relished be the one who frees them, this is freedom, be free and let others be free, defend not your egoist dimensions, but the foundations of love, harmony, tolerance, through non violence because these are the only treasures, India has built, and equally distributed everywhere, and this is the reason, Me, my nation and my people are surviving today.

We all believe in certain things, theories, ideologies, figures, ideals, people, customs, religions, being human we can not stay away from thinking and believing. Belief the product of thought process of the mind, a thought process which has build up in our minds, from the time of birth, being fed up with the teachings of parents, friends, schools, government, religions, society, and self learning, the thought process feeds itself until it has all the resources to build a belief, a belief can be said to be a iterative product of the so called thought process, it is iterative because the belief is itself a prototype an stronger version of it replaces the old. We carry our beliefs with us, in all quarters of life, it is only our beliefs that come up with us all time, and make us work in the direction, they want to lead us, they look inseparable from us and so we keep on feeding our beliefs with whatever they need to grow. When the belief needs something from us, to get stronger, it produces the desire in us, and then the desire is materialized in the materialistic environments, through our efforts. Desires are in fact the product of our beliefs, for example, I believe I should get a job, I desire a job; I believe I should get married; I desire to get married. The beliefs are working under cover inside us to create in us the never ending desires, which we think are essential for our individual need to survive. The beliefs create a mental environment of their own, starting from what you are going to think, to what we are going to materialize in real life, which we call up individualist Ego. Creation of an Ego, starts from the day when we start to think and start to believe, which in turn comes up with desires, and the ego survives for the rat race of fulfillments of desires, in competition with other egos involved. Collectively all work together, thoughts, beliefs, ego, on a degree of symbiosis, feeding each other, and growing together.

Understanding the anatomy of belief, and the thought process involved, is essential to understand to differentiate between a forced belief and a natural belief. Here, comes up another set of questions, how is a natural belief is different from a forced belief? How to find in ourselves as to what we believe in is natural or forced on us? So the simple idea to understand it is, whatever that can be forced is not natural, and whatever that is natural does not need to be forced. Each human lives on the verge of an intersection of the collective beliefs and personal beliefs, where the collective beliefs always torture the personal belief, being fed with education (again not knowledge) and entangled in the spider web of desire, the natural beliefs are suppressed by our ego, hence we all become what others want us to be. Being educated each second with the surrounding individual egos, creates a set of forced belief and a forced ego, still the individual self which is always more human than the surrounding human egos, keeps with it a very strong set of belief seeds, which create natural belief . Some may ask now, why natural belief is in seed form? It is because this is how it grows, if it is not a seed but a fully grown tree of natural beliefs, it can be completely rooted out of us though forced beliefs and ego, just as a seed is capable of growing in a full grown tree, with the arrival of favorable conditions, it lies dormant in us, but it does not mean it is not living.

To understand the difference between real self and an ego, what that comes up, is whatever that is a real self can not be the part of ego, and whatever that is ego is not real self. What is a real self? Real self is what for natural beliefs, what ego is for the forced beliefs, is that strongest part in us which even keeps its identity alive, and tolerates the whips of the ego, but still it can not be destroyed at any costs, and just waits for the favorable showers (conditions) to sprout and grow from the belief seed, to come up as a tree. Whereas, the forced belief initiated by us, through a calculative outcome of the education, we get, keep on gathering momentum and grows itself in a high fashion, like the weed trying to capture every ground in us, in inseparable integration with ego, which gives us the belief of egoist individualism.

Now coming over to the question, How to find in ourselves as to what we believe in is natural or forced on us? To answer this is not too hard, as this is a question whose answer is known to most of us, and if you can differentiate between the forced beliefs and natural beliefs, then here it is known by you too that the seed of your natural belief is sprouting in you, though it may be a slow growth, due to the vast expanse of the weed of ego and forced beliefs. For those who do not know, for them there is a very natural way to know the answer, find the roots of your beliefs, if their source is found in a collective system (family, society, religion, government, media, education), it is obviously forced upon you, and if what that starts from you, yourself, is all yours naturally.

Acceptance of forced beliefs taking them as real and the only available set of beliefs, by discarding the natural beliefs, is the cause of growth of unreal Ego which is not our real self, Ego is the creation of an unnatural individual identity which protects the said set of beliefs, and hence tries to shield them. Whenever the forced beliefs on us are hurt, the ego gathers up, and tend to destroy everything that comes up in its way as a threat and so multiplies itself many times when confronted by another ego acting as a shield. But a shield always only protects the holder, and can not harm the other, but ego hurts others too, so it is actually a destructive weapon not actually a shield. The cause of violence, is the ego, and it is what that do not let us believe in what we want to believe in, and what we want to believe in, is what our real self asks for and so it gets harder and harder, to believe in something which our real self wants to, because the ego, and the forced beliefs, make it harder for us.

As nature accepts everything as it is, the natural real self in us, and the natural beliefs, take us towards the goal of tolerance and respect for every existing belief. The farther we go away from these, the harder gets for us to accept, respect or tolerate other set of beliefs, and leads to My belief better than yours.

Even if we like to associate ourselves to a belief that we like, it gets harder because of the existing ego, and other set of contradicting beliefs in us, which push ourselves in a state of confusion, where we find hard to get rid of the efforts of years which we put in the development of our ego and then it becomes more harder to accept the new ones, as the glass full of water can not be filled with honey, the glass should be empty for accepting the another, and for emptying the glass, it is required to dissolve the ego, and let the real self come up, which is in fact a hard procedure but not impossible, though we should remember, nothing should be poured in the half filled glass, or it will create a mixture of no use. Nothing is difficult to believe, its just the comfort zone of the ego, that makes it harder.

I don’t remember when I first read the editorial of any newspaper. But it has been a long time now. I have been watching newspapers because of my interest in the news and reading newspapers. What is interesting to note is the increase in the devotion to columnists and opinion based articles. It has become a trend to generate views and debate over them and keep on doing so for a long time. People are also asked to participate in debates and it continues. While few of the people make their original views, millions of others are forced to accept one of the several views and million others remain confused.

Once I commented on a blog,

It is good to have more opinion based columns. However, I don’t like them much. A newspaper should publish a news as it is, i.e., neutrally. It helps people to judge the news and have opinions of their own. Now, if we post an opinion based column, you are forcing the views of the author upon masses making the people judgmental and prejudiced about an issue.

Also, many columns on the same issue will confuse the people. They will have all the views in their mind but will not be able to judge it on their own merits.

Once the ability to judge on merit is lost, we will have a nation of mere spectators who have no thoughts and opinions of their own – a death of a democracy then and there.

The people who write for a journal or a newspaper or for that matter who communicate through news channels are people with ample learning and experience. It is good to have their views. But isn’t it wrong to force these views. I know newspapers, news channels, etc are not doing intentionally, but somehow it is happening and it should be controlled.

Shouldn’t there be a limit to these opinion based columns?

Never has been a time less opportune than this to start writing. Its 10 days to my exams and I hardly know any subjects. Nevertheless I just read that “Never can there be a right time to do things. If there is, then it is now“. So here I go. Starting off with a small narration of the college feel and a few things here and there.

The mood in NITIE has been upbeat for past few days. Two major trophies, YES bank transformation series and HUL LIME case study, have been added to the NITIE showcase, all credit to the well deserving teams who put up a strong case against tough competition from top B-Schools in the country. Hope to see these events translate into reinforcing brand NITIE in the industry and on the college front translate into more participation and prises.

The mood in Room 218, well this is my room in hostel 5, has never had a strong correlation with the happenings outside, though we do get inspired often to follow in such luminous footsteps and get disinterested faster seeing that either the shoe size does not match or the direction the steps are heading does not head towards the destination in our mind. But 218 knows that the path to be taken by each person is unique and ours is going to be what we want. Coming to the point what we want or what we are headed for is a matter to be put in ink later.

Theres a lot to say but this is enough for the first one. Adios for now …

(Image: Agra-Chaos on Road)

Since long I have been thinking to write something on this issue but was not able to collect my random thoughts properly. Today I thought it is better to say it in whatever manner – proper or improper. At-least the message will be passed. Also the trigger point this time was a foreigner who was on a tour on his old and antique piece of Royal Enfield. I saw him near Koregaon Park crossing here in Pune and found him breaking the rule which normally he might have followed if he would have been in his own country, but not in India. Why? Because we, the natives are least bothered about following the same ourselves so how the hell can we expect someone alien to follow the rules of our land? I kept quiet, I remained mum. What could have I said to him when my own people do not follow the rules?

On driving through the roads, zipping besides other vehicles, it is a remarkable observation that there are people who drive on roads without following traffic rules and regulations. For example, whenever I drive from Dagdu Sheth Halwai towards Shaniwar Peth, at ABC Chowk and more often than none I have observed that people cross the road on their vehicles without bothering the traffic signal to turn Green. I specially mention this place because the place where one has to stop, it is difficult to know what is coming from the road which is on the left. But people endanger their lives as well as that of others. Several times I have observed that the policemen are the first one to break the rules and cross. One can also observe people driving on the wrong side. Why? Because they will have to drive a little extra to take a U-turn and reach their destination. This sometimes creates havoc and becomes extremely dangerous. And all the people who are doing such things are the well-educated people who boast of working in a MNC and being thecrème de la crème amongst the Indian people.

I was thinking why we behave in such a way that we don’t give a heed to the rules and regulation. And the answer was once again given when I talked to some children (around 9 or 10 years old. I asked their age) who were riding a bicycle and were on the wrong side of the road. I asked them why they were riding on the wrong side. They said because others are driving. One of them said that he comes with his father to buy bread daily and his father drives in a similar fashion. When I asked whether this was wrong or not, they said,”Hum itna aage kyun jaayein, jab dukaan yahan se 2-3 dukanein chhodkar hai!!” (Why should we travel further when the shop is just 2-3 shops away from here?) I had got the answer. I explained them that what they were doing is wrong. I asked whether they love India. They all said yes. So I asked them to follow these rules. This will make mother India happy. They agreed and left (still from the wrong side).

What are we teaching our kids? And why are we doing so? I have observed that many school buses drive rashly and break rules more often. The school has the responsibility to guide the children in the right way. I agree that this is a combined effort of theirs and the parents but at-least the schools can set an example. If their buses follow the traffic rules properly, then I think the children will have someone to look forward too when they are in doubt regarding what is right and what is wrong and may be the parents also change for the better.

Children tend to imitate the acts of their elders. We all want our kids to respect us and follow the rules. But will it be possible when we ourselves are not following the rules? Breaking the rules has become so common that we hardly realize that we have broken a rule. We make these things common and then crib that the people are not following rules. If we cannot follow the rules ourselves then we don’t have the right to even crib about it.

I know it is difficult to change everyone. There will always be a few people who will not change but let them be what they are. Administration will take care of them. As of now there are so many people breaking the rules, it is difficult for the administration to punish them all. But if everyone takes his/her own responsibility then the people who break the rules will be less and easier to catch and punish.

I doubt that we are going to realize this any sooner. But hope for the best. All the best!

Safe Driving!!

How many social workers does it take to change a light bulb?
– The light bulb doesn’t need changing, it’s the system that needs to change.
– None. Social workers never change anything.
– None. The light bulb is not burnt out, it’s just differently lit.
– None. They set up a team to write a paper on coping with darkness.
– None. It’s not in our budget.
– None. It is no longer a reimbursable activity. You must first define the measurable outcome you are trying to achieve and get approval from the Community Mental Health Board.
– One. Can’t really tell you why, it just feels right.
– One. But you need letters of support from community social service agencies.
– Three. One to do the work, one to share the experience, and one to supervise and make sure that professional work is done.
– Five. One to screw it in, three to form the support group, and one to help with placement
- Anonymous

As a social worker primarily works in an environment where hypocrisy is in the air, double standards tend to develop and at some point or the other the social worker is introduced to its own ‘two-facedness’ – a naked truth! Making one feel guilty and embarrassed both at the same time. This phenomena can be well exemplified by an ostentatious miserly behavior under certain circumstances.

My ‘presumed’ traits as a social worker:-

With an air of assumed intimacy to documentation on the basis of a presumed flair of writing I convinced myself that report writing shall not be that big a deal; and how naïve I was, for there were hardly any weekends when I did not crib about my work. The forced detailed reporting part of it irritated me sometimes even though I eventually came to understand its importance; but the work itself has brought about some fundamental changes in me as a person, again ’presumably’ positive. (I was once told that unjustified optimism works aids in maintaining mental stability in certain circumstances).
Not knowing proper Hindi has put me in an embarrassing situation a lot of times during fieldwork, so much so, that I had to start making extra effort to improve my Hindi amidst all the documentation work the Department loves to pile on me. I don’t think there was any situation where I felt like a misfit in social work, I do like the subject, if it is my interest area I have found myself reading voraciously and working passionately for the same. In fact, now at this point it is hard to even think of some other profession, yet there are things which get more of my attention without much demand. I have been fascinated and intrigued by most forms of art, rarely made a conscious attempt to pursue any professionally. Whether its theatre, film-making, painting, sculpting, photography, designing, choreography, singing…though some of these have captured more interest and I gave myself a chance to be spontaneous and indulge but never gave a serious thought about pursuing it professionally; as I sometimes feel that making it structured would ruin the creative aspect of it and hence my sensibilities will no longer be indulged.
Creative juices…social work does nothing more than dampening, letting the creative juices flow (here…in the Department) in fact be a very far-fetched dream…not that it’s a very structured course…but well there are unsaid yet defined frameworks under which one is supposed to function.

Opposition between realism and idealism is exhibited in their different assumptions on objectivity in the social work arena. Idealism in essence feeds the utopist though of an ‘ideal’ society which serves as a long forged dream to be achieved for the social workers and hence keeps them motivated. On the other hand, realism sees the external world as having absolute existence and hence things are gauged as they are. With a realistic viewpoint, the theory, praxis, and objectivity can ne well amalgamated and the desired results can be achieved. Idealism distorts the reality, when the philosophy of mind operates, distant goal is formulated and at practice level, in that quest the concept of social work gets diluted. To get the real picture, the aerial photographs do not suffice, making a landing on the ground becomes necessary. A ground level perspective and a reality check is invaluable and to understand a complex and sensitive domain like social work and also when one is to relate such a profession with one’s own existence, a glimpse into various perceptions is perhaps a little more than essential.

Few days back I met few of my friends. Following is the conversation that took place:-

A, B, C, D, E, F,G,H, I,J -

Hey…long time! How are you?? What are you doing these days?

Me-

Yeah…seriously it’s been ages it seems. I am fine…pursuing my Masters in Social Work from Delhi University.

A -

That’s really cool…somehow I have always been fascinated by people in the social development sector…I mean you guys study the society and work for its progress. Interesting…you people actually work with people.

B-

Okkkk…there is a course on Social Work? I thought anyone could do social work? What exactly do you study in that?

C-

Hmmm…it’s a good course waise; a professional one at that; but don’t you think Law would have better if you really want t to work for the people, at least you will have a tool in your hands to deal with their issues.

D -

Oh dear…how come…I remember you had PCMB in 12th …anyway I guess you have changed…well whatever suits you…doesn’t seem, very promising though. By the way I completed my engineering and am working with Accenture these days.

E-

Wow…that’s really good. Noble profession huh, helping out the poor and the needy. Nice Nice. What are you gonna do after this by the way…some NGO???

F -

Ohh…good…so you like work in slums and all??

G -

Glad to hear that…at least some people will be sensitized enough to do some good. Why don’t you guys do something about these rape and molestation cases?

H-

Awesome…I can already picture you in a Kurta (Fab India types) with cotton Dupatta and a JHOLA!!!

I-

Its good…but frankly it came to me as a surprise…I was sort of presuming that you would do MSc Human Development only…I saw your name in the list!

J-

Mast hai! Koi certificate etc dilva do didi…it will add to my profile…aapke tto kaafi contacts honge!

So well those are some of the reactions I got and still get about my chosen profession. Though I never want to admit/accept that I chose it as I believe I never was mature enough to make any such decision. Not in 9th, when I had to decide between Hindi and Sanskrit, not in 11th when I supposed to pick up one’ stream’ – among Science, Commerce and Humanities. Not after 12th, when I had to seriously define my career, not after that when my Masters was supposed to define my specialization and hence future professional life. After a turbulent flight passing over various places I had a presumably safe landing at the Department of Social Work. But being too presumptuous does not work much to one’s benefit and the same applied here, after the orientation; which nothing less than a shock therapy aiming at making us immune to the workload, I guess I wasn’t really that effective as we got quite a few chocks in the time to come.
“Learning by doing”; is what the course describes and very strictly prescribes, it is undoubtedly an excellent way to learn and frankly…if I look back at the last 2 years, I learnt a lot but almost 80% of it was through doing, yet I an enrolled in a course which is supposed to teach me how to ‘do’, but that was taught not when I ‘do’, but when it appears in the syllabus. Theory remained theory, and practice was practice, they met infrequently and usually stood in conflict.
