Social Media – Journey towards a New Era – “Webhood”

Social Media

Social Media

Social media has come a long way. Some people have just used it and some have misused it. And few have gained too. Social Media can be a powerful tool if used effectively. Many Social media sites like Facebook, FriendFeed, and Twitter (list is not exhaustive) help you to reach millions. Social Media has gone from the days of Orkut, where you had your personal page on World Wide Web to the stage of Market Networking, giving you a strategic platform to reach millions of audience without or less expenditure and in lesser number of minutes spent.

The major reason that why Social Media has been a huge success is because the people who indulge themselves in this area believe, either knowingly or unknowingly, in ALTRUISM. The basic reason for the success of Web 2.0 is its altruistic nature. The desire to help and be helped. That is why I, and many others, like to call Web 2.0 as Altruist Web.

Blogging(WordPress, Blogger) and Micro-blogging(Twitter) have helped people to say what is in their mind and reach out to millions.

Bookmarking sites have helped people to share links of an article they liked.

In short everything which comes under Social Media realm is running because of altruism. I have never met most of the co-authors on this blog. We just met online through social networking sites like Pagalguy,  Facebook, and Orkut. And at some point thought that we can start something together and what else a Weblog – a Blog. And that is how this started. A social media running on Web2.0 gave way to another social media.

After centuries of feudalism and then attaining nationhood, we are marching into the era of “Webhood”. I just coined this term. It is powerful, more powerful than Nationhood. In Webhood, people belonging to different caste, creed, race, religion, and nation come together to form an altruist society which may or may not meet physically but are involved in sharing, helping and networking resources available with them with the society.

Let’s hope that Webhood will bring masses from different nations together and help in bringing the beautiful earth – Our Mother, more beautiful.

well the concept of ‘webhood’ is certainly appealing to many and the stats can prove it but then I have doubts about it having an altruistic motive for everyone.

But undoubtedly, ‘webhood’ has a lot of scope…

@Jessica Not everyone involved will be altruist on Web like we have in real world. People may join web for their need and requirements, but those people who will help and sort their problems will be altruist. Most of the social media help sites and forums like Pagalguy, TechForum, etc work on this altruist nature of people. Otherwise these forums would have got closed long ago. Majority of people who stay on web are altruist in nature as those who come for selfish purpose of just getting help on certain issues leave the web soon. If you visit Pagalguy forums, there are lots of queries from “Newbies”. Most of the newbies remain and keep posting queries and helping others. Those who just come for help on certain matters leave the forum after 2-3 posts only. To be on web and Social Media, you definitely need to be altruist by nature, otherwise soon you will be looking for other ways rather than Web.

The concept of Webhood is a great one. Here people will help irrespective of Religion, region, caste, creed or race. And this will be possible because of altruist nature of human beings.
